On Sunday, 22nd October, nearly 120 of us set off on an unforgettable trip to Wellesbourne Airfield, located just 45 minutes away. With anticipation high, we departed from Solihull at 10:30 am, picking up more participants in Dorridge at 10:45 am, before making our way to the airfield for an exciting day of exploration.
The visit provided a rare opportunity to experience aviation history from a unique perspective. Guided tours took us behind the scenes, offering insights into the daily operations of an active airfield. A highlight of the day was the chance to sit inside a Vulcan aeroplane, an iconic aircraft with a remarkable history.
In addition to stepping aboard the Vulcan, participants had the opportunity to visit the control tower, meet the on-site fire crew, and explore the Wellesbourne Airfield Museum, which houses an impressive collection of aviation artefacts and memorabilia.
The trip was particularly well suited for children aged six and above, as well as for aviation enthusiasts of all ages. While a reasonable understanding of English was helpful to fully appreciate the guided tours, the hands-on nature of the experience ensured that everyone could enjoy the visit.
A café was available on-site for refreshments, though many participants opted to bring their own food and enjoy a relaxed break in the open surroundings of the airfield.
From exploring historic aircraft to engaging with aviation professionals, the day was filled with excitement and discovery. The opportunity to experience first-hand what it’s like to be in an operational airfield left a lasting impression on all who attended.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make this such a special event. We look forward to organising more engaging and educational trips in the future!
